Pacific DX: Radio Australia & New Zealand on my Sony ICF-SW7600GR
Receiving the world’s most distant shortwave stations (at least from my location in Germany) with my Sony ICF-SW7600GR portable world band receiver and its built-in telescopic antenna: Radio Australia on 9475 kHz from Shepparton (16140 km/9770 miles) Radio New Zealand on 5950 kHz from Rangitaiki (18202 km/11018 miles) Reception was on 2 February 2011 at 1500 UTC and 1505 UTC. Radio Australia had massive coverage of the cyclone “Yasi” and relayed programming of ABC Local Radio Queensland. Radio New Zealand International relayed a weather forecast and further programming from their domestic service as well.

@craig3008 Let’s hope so! But keep in mind that international broadcasting is usually among the first “targets” of politicians when financial cuts are on the agenda. Radio Australia itself suffered from severe cutbacks since 1996, a.o. the loss of the powerful Darwin transmitter site.
@senderjaeger I live in Melbourne where Radio Australia is based. Radio Australia is actually expanding their services shortly – so are not going anywhere! RA will be a fixture on SW for many years to come I’m sure.
Great! Those two are great stations to listen and also most distant from my qth.
@miked3038 Thanks for your comment. I like these stations, too and also sincerely hope that they will remain on shortwave. I assume sw broadcasting still plays a certain role in the Pacific island nations. Think only of all those natural disasters like the recent cyclone that devastated Queensland… Internet radio and satellite reception fail in such cases while one can easily stay informed with a little battery-powered shortwave radio.
Superb. I always get a kick out of picking these two stations up from the England. I hope they remain broadcasting on shortwave.
Thanks for posting this video.
